Everything you need to know about the 2021-22 Apex Legends Global Series

by Jessica Scharnagle

The Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) adjusted its competitive landscape this year with the introduction of a Pro League format which is welcoming to both amateur and professional teams with its hybrid open qualifier and invitational format.

For the ALGS Regional Pro Leagues, 40 of the top teams in each ALGS region will compete in a regular season of competition. The top teams will advance to the playoffs, and the bottom teams will defend their spot in the Pro League against the top teams from the ALGS Challenger Circuit.

ALGS Pro League’s format and schedule

The top 20 teams in each region’s Pro League were directly invited to compete, the 21-24 seeds qualified via a preseason qualifier, and the rest of the teams qualified based on their cumulative points earned throughout the preseason qualifiers.

There are five regions: North America, South America, Asia-Pacific (APAC) North, APAC South and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Split 1

Forty teams in each region are now competing in the Split 1 regular season. Each team will play 36 games in the regular season, consisting of six consecutive games in a series. Each series will be played over the course of one day.

Currently, teams are battling to qualify for the Split 1 playoffs. The top 10 teams will qualify for the playoffs, the next 22 will stay in the Pro League for Split 2, and the bottom eight teams will have to fight for their spot in Pro League Split 2 against the top Challengers teams.

Split 2

Split 2 is set to take place February to March 2022 and will likely be almost identical to Split 1 in terms of format, but the competing teams will be slightly different. Based on Split 1 results, the top teams from the Challengers circuit will compete against the bottom teams in the Pro League circuit in January. The top eight teams from the Split 2 qualifier will advance to the Pro League Split 2.

Playoffs

The top teams from Split 1 across all five regions will compete for a $1 million prize pool in an international LAN event in January 2022. The 40 playoff teams break down like this: 10 from North America, 10 from EMEA, 10 from APAC North, five from APAC South and five from South America.

These teams also will gain points in order to reach the 2022 ALGS Championship, which is set to take place in July 2022. During Split 2, the top four teams in the playoffs will advance straight to the championship, and there is also a $1 million prize pool for the Split 2 playoffs.

Forty teams will compete in the championship event. Besides the four that will directly qualify via the Split 2 playoffs, 26 will qualify via playoff points which they can score from the Split 1 and Split 2 playoffs. The last 10 teams will qualify by competing in a last chance qualifier which also includes the best Challenger Circuit teams. There are two spots per region in the last chance qualifier.

ALGS Pro League points breakdown

For individual matches, teams can earn points by tallying up kills and by how they place in the match. Each kill results in one point for the team. The breakdown of points attributed for placement in matches is below:

  • 1st: 12
  • 2nd: 9
  • 3rd: 7
  • 4th: 5
  • 5th: 4
  • 6-7th: 3
  • 8-10th: 2
  • 11-15th: 1
  • 16-20th: 0

After each series is over, there are also points for the overall placement in the series. The distribution of points for postmatch series points is the same as for the individual matches -- the team with the most points in a series will receive 12 points for that week, the second-place team will receive nine, and so on.
