by Brian Bencomo

Nerd Street’s owned and operated gaming venues, known as Localhosts, are not only places where you can stop by to play your favorite games on high-quality gaming PCs and consoles. Localhosts also are the site of LAN tournaments, private events, camps, activations, watch parties and more. Every month, we’ll be spotlighting some of the best events that have happened at Localhosts around the country, from Philadelphia to Denver and everywhere in between. Here’s a look back at some of the fun things that happened at Localhost over the past month.

Queens of Philly

The Aurora Women’s Call of Duty League came to a conclusion with a championship LAN tournament at Localhost Philly in August. Organized by Call of Duty Agent and EZone Media, the nine-team championship tournament was a big success and brought a lot of excitement and hype to Localhost. Unjustified took home the trophy after an undefeated run through the tournament capped by a grand finals victory over Omit.

King of the Rockies

The first-ever LAN for Age of Empire 4 in North America took place in Denver at Localhost last month. Run by the group Rising Empires, this tournament featured players from the United States and Canada, onsite casters and a production team from across the world (including a production lead from Norway!). This eight-player invitational was the culmination of months of qualifiers and work headed up by a passionate community and funded purely through donations and spectator tickets. The tournament ended with a hard-fought finals between brothers from Canada (Puppypaw01 and Wam01) with the younger (Wam01) taking the win in an upset.

FGC thriving in Philly and Jersey

Localhost Philly’s latest fighting game community monthly, Go For Broke, took place in mid-August in collaboration with PMerks and USMK to run Broad Street Blur, a Mario Kart 8 LAN event. With over 115 competitors across six games, Go For Broke continues to be one of Localhost’s biggest recurring events. Thanks to the support of SSWS and Iron Grid (NJ), Localhost has been able to provide a great experience for both the venue’s Philly regulars and the extended Localhost family from over the bridge in New Jersey.

Further south in Jersey, Localhost Rowan began hosting a new FGC biweekly meetup called Limit Break. The first iteration of Limit Break saw 32 attendees and 45 entrants competing in brackets across three games: Tekken 8, Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 6. The first edition of this FGC biweekly was so popular that Limit Break #2 saw similar numbers: 29 attendees and 43 entrants. Limit Break continues this month, and a new FGC monthly called Break Through: Overdrive will debut in late September at Rowan.

Welcome back Frag

Fragadelphia, the popular North American Counter-Strike tournament organizer, was back at Localhost for the first time in a couple years last month. Five teams participated in the Counter-Strike 2 tournament at Localhost Rowan, which was hosting a Fragadelphia CS2 event for the first time after previously hosting Nerd Street’s The Standoff CS2 tournaments. This was the first of three Frag Jersey tournaments, with the next one happening this month and another one set to take place in November.

Farewell to summer

August marked the finish line for Localhost’s slate of summer youth programming across Localhost Philly, Denver and Rowan. The final weeks of summer camps and Parks & Rec. fields happened across multiple locations.

In Philly, interns Taron and Zakai from the Philadelphia Youth Network completed their summer internships. During their summer with the crew at 401 N. Broad, they had the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience by assisting with summer camps and field trips and learning how to plan and build events for both collegiate and open demographics. It all culminated with their own capstone project, an NBA 2K24 tournament for their fellow PYN cohort students and friends!

With summer programming over in Denver and school back in session, Student Nights are back on Thursdays. And with students back on campus, Localhost Rowan took part in Welcome Week activities. A record number of customers walked through the doors of Localhost during Welcome Week to engage in open play and a variety of hourly activities and competitions.
