Nerd Street Gamers and Maestro Filmworks Nominated in Two Categories for 2020 Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards

August 6, 2020 – Nerd Street Gamers secured two Mid-Atlantic Emmy nominations for its show FTW Philly, the broadcast series focusing on the world of highly competitive gaming across the Philadelphia region from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Atlantic City, New Jersey.

FTW Philly started as a pilot on NBC Sports Philadelphia in September 2019, and was quickly picked up for a full 10-episode season. Episodes covered all things esports in the Philadelphia area from ways traditional live-action sports are partnering with esports, to inside looks at some national tournaments being held in the region such as Harrisburg University Esports Invitational. They also showcased stories that are helping drive this booming industry.

Hosted by Marisa Magnatta, WMMR’s Preston and Steve Show producer, the series shined a light on the rapid development of the Philadelphia esports scene, linking it to the global growth of the overall industry.

The episode “FTW Philly – Collegiate Esports” was nominated in the EDUCATION/SCHOOLS- PROGRAM/SPECIAL category and covered the experience and innerworkings of University esports clubs and teams including Rowan University, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Harrisburg University and Drexel University.

FTW Philly was also nominated for its “Enabled Gaming” feature which focuses on the importance of mental and physical health in the esports scene. The episode highlighted gamers of all levels working to stay mentally and physically fit, and included an exclusive interview with one passionate young man who doesn’t allow his disability to prevent him from reaching his goal of competitive gaming.

“The Enabled Gaming feature in FTW Philly was an honor to work on,” said Alex Frederick, Executive Producer for FTW Philly. “We wanted to shed light on the benefits of gaming and the roles it can play in people’s lives. Gaming has a way of creating an escape for so many people, regardless of age, whether it’s to relax, sharpen your mind or help you separate from the real world, there are often benefits to gaming that go unnoticed.”
